Playoffs Round 2 – Sept. 19th 4pm

Round one is over and all higher seeds advanced to the second round except for RSC. Round 2 will be this Saturday at 4pm and feature top seed Balls Deep going up against last year’s champs Mables and two seed Kilo Bravo matching up with Soft Spot.

During the regular season, Balls Deep took both games against Mables but no one would be surprised if the playoffs wake up Mables and they found their way back to the finals to defend their crown. Kilo and Soft Spot split their season series with Kilo taking the first game and Soft Spot taking the most recent. Both games should be entertaining and if the higher seeds win, you will find two teams in the finals who have never been before (at least in their current form with their current name). Good luck all!

Looking Out for One of Our Own: Andy Becker

Hello Players, Fans and Friends of the WSL!

As many of you may, or may not know, one of our former players in the WSL, Andy Becker, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer. He is currently recovering from a partial colon removal while undergoing several scans and biopsies to determine a chemotherapy treatment plan and the potential need for additional surgeries on his liver. You can read more about his status and treatment on his page his sister set up here:

Andy (first ballot Hall of Famer in the WSL) played for Black Betty and helped bring down the Black Curtain on the league for many years. He moved back to Missouri a couple years back, but has still managed to come into town to visit us, hang out, even win another championship with the Betty.

This kid. This is a good kid. Lots of people have reached out to me to ask what we can do for him. It’s really awesome! And we do need to do something. With that being said, we’d like to dedicate our WSL Opening Day Party to Andy, and see if we can raise some money to assist in his medical bills.

The party is still tentatively scheduled for April 11th. So, I’d like to put together a committee that can assist in coming up with ideas to raise money, to help out, and in general, pitch in so we can have a successful party and fundraiser.

If you are interested and want to help out, please email me here:

Even if you just have an idea, feel free to reach out to me. Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Let’s look out for one of our own!

Thanks, all!

Revised Schedule… We Play Into September

To make up the games we missed on April 13, due to muddy conditions of McCarren Park, and a rain out on May 11, we have added two weeks to the season.

Games originally scheduled on April 13, will be played on August 24. Those games are:

3:45 PM

  • Roebling Room @ Spritzenhaus (Field 1)
  • Matchless @ Bears (Field 2)

5:45 PM

  • Soft Spot @ Balls Deep (Field 1)
  • Mables @ Gibson (Field 2)

Games originally scheduled on May 11, will be played on September 7.

3:30 PM

  • Roebling Room @ Matchless (Field 1)
  • Soft Spot @ Gibson (Field 2)

5:30 PM

  • Balls Deep @ Levee (Field 1)
  • Bears @ Mables (Field 2)

The schedule has been updated.

Like We Told You, Season Starts on April 6

After much waiting, our permits have arrived. Today, we can officially announce that the season will start on Saturday, April 6. Rejoice!

Construction work in McCarren Park however continues. I didn’t see the fallen light pole when I rode my bike past the park this morning. But I did see a construction crew working on the walkways. Because there has been measurable progress on the paths, it seems entirely reasonable to expect our fields to be ready for our gentle abuse on April 6.

With the permits in hand, we have the necessary information to produce a schedule. You can find that here by April 1, following Saturday’s super-secret managers’ meeting, which will be held in an underground bunker below the Newtown Creek.

Softball Fever. It’s Back. Inoculate Yourself!

A second dollar from each purchase goes into the cash prize kitty!!!! One winner will be announced at the end of the season. The Soft Spot will keep a cash tally running in the bar as the season progresses. The more Bud Light you buy, the bigger the cash prize gets!!!

Membership cards required to play. We only want Ballers to be the cash winners!!

2013 Season Starts April 6

Get excited, everyone. Softball season throughout Brooklyn, including our league, will start on April 6.

We’re still waiting for two things:
* Our permits to arrive. They are “in the mail.”
* The removal of the light post that fell during Superstorm Sandy.

Once our permits arrive, we can draft a schedule, which we will distribute to managers as soon as possible.

McCarren Cup Finals

The Finals are underway.

It’s the battle of the Bedford Ave Bars! The Gibson Robots are leading the Soft Spot Specials in Game 1, 12-8. We will resume the game this Saturday, September 29, at 3:30. It will be the top of the sixth inning with no outs.

Game 2 will commence immediately afterward.

Game 3, if necessary, will be on Saturday, October 6.

Please, everyone come out for some great softball.

Playoffs Continue on Saturday

The Soft Spot swept Matchless in two games to advance to their first-ever appearance in the McCarren Cup Finals. Congratulations.

Meanwhile, we have a split in the other series. Top-ranked team Mables won the first game against the Gibson, 11-8. The Gibson came back late in the second game and edged out Mables, 5-4. The two teams will conclude the series this coming Saturday.

After completing the deciding game, the winner of the Mables-Gibson series will face the Soft Spot. We hope to start at 5:00 or shortly thereafter.

Good luck to all.

Weather Update for September 8

The National Weather Service has forecast a 60% chance of rain for the metropolitan region and a tornado warning for Brooklyn and Queens until 11:30 AM. The region has seen heavy rain this morning, but it looks like the heavy rain will be passing soon. There will be another small storm after that. If the storm continues at its current pace and direction, we should be clear by 1:00 PM. Fingers crossed.

For the current status, check the league website and follow the league Twitter: @MCarrenSoftball.

Update: 2:20 PM

Scheduled games are on. We will undoubtedly have to clean up the field because, as we all know, it floods quite easily. Please arrive early, by 3:00 PM, to assist in clean up.
